Moravian Festkultur
Historic Bethlehem Partnership invites all visitors to explore their latest exhibit: Moravian Festkultur, guest-curated by Lanie Graf, assistant archivist of the Moravian Archives, Bethlehem. This exhibit celebrates the festive culture of the Moravians from the 18th century to the present. Using modern materials to reconstruct events described in archival records, the exhibit shows how Moravians worldwide celebrated church holidays and birthdays of church leaders. Elaborate displays called “illuminations” fill the Saal of the Gemeinhaus with art, religious imagery, lights and music.
The exhibit is noteworthy for its elaborate displays and interpretation of an exciting (albeit largely unrecognized) aspect of Moravian culture.
