2007 Schneider Lecture

Grace Kelly: Icon of Style to Royal Bride

Presented by Kristina Haugland, Associate Curator of Costumes and Textiles at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Grace Kelly was acclaimed as both a film star and fashion leader in the mid 1950s. Her engagement to Prince Ranier of Monaco made Grace the ultimate “fairy-tale” bride. This generously illustrated talk will review Grace Kelly’s career and on-screen look while also examining the understated and elegant personal style that women continue to try to emulate today. Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, which was designed by Helen Rose and made under top-secret conditions at MGM excited intense interest at the time. While the dress remains the example of bridal elegance, it has also engendered much misinformation and myth.

At the 2007 Schneider lecture, the design and details of Princess Grace’s famous dress (which was given to the Philadelphia Museum of Art shortly after the ceremony) as well as her much-publicized bridal trousseau, attendants’ dresses and royal wedding celebrations will be discussed.
