Annual Zug Lecture

This year’s Jeanette Barres Zug lecture will feature Spirituality and the Daily Songs of Moravian Women.
On Sunday, April 13, 2008 at 2 p.m., Dr. Pauline Fox will lecture on the music of Moravian women and Rebecca Kleintop Owens (along with members of Bethlehem’s Central Moravian Church Choir) will perform selections of music from the lecture.

Dr. Pauline Fox has been researching Moravian music since 1993, focusing on manuscript books used in the Pennsylvania boarding schools ca. 1800. Her 1997 dissertation at New York University explored roles of women and girls, cross-cultural adaptation and inroads of the mainstream of contemporaneous American culture into that Germanic Culture. Since 1998 she has presented papers at the biennial Bethlehem Conferences on Moravian Music. Her research has been published in the Moravian Music Journal 1997-98, and she has contributed the chapter “Music Instruction in Moravian Schools” for the Moravian Music Foundation’s Introduction to the Music of the Moravians in the Eastman studies in Musicology, just released by the University of Rochester Press.
Dr. Fox has spoken at many conferences and seminars, presenting her vast knowledge of Moravian Music from the early days of the Moravian Church through today’s Bethlehem Bach Choir. Dr. Fox has collaborated with and worked for various organizations such as the Moravian Church Archives, the Bethlehem Public Library, Historic Bethlehem, Lancaster School of the Bible, Pinebrook Junior College, Nyack College, Marywood College, Moravian College, East Stroudsburg University, the New York Public Library, Shawnee Press and the University of Chicago Press.
Dr. Fox is currently organist and Director of Music at East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church. She also teaches private music lessons and helps music students in the Tutorial Program at East Stroudsburg University. Dr. Fox is active in the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She most recently completed copy editing and proofreading of commentary on ten books of the Old Testament for the African Bible Commentary, released by Zondervan in July 2006.
Rebecca Kleintop Owens is the organist and Director of Music at Central Moravian Church in Bethlehem, PA. She is also the organist for the Moravian Theological Seminary. Rebecca previously served as Senior Organist at the internationally televised Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, FL as well as assistant organist of Philadelphia’s famed Wanamaker Grand Court Organ- the largest playing musical instrument in the world. A magna cum laude graduate of Moravian College, Rebecca earned her Artist Diploma in organ performance from the world-renowned Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. An active solo recitalist, accompanist and clinician, Rebecca has performed throughout the United States and Europe. Rebecca has recorded several CDs with The King’s Brass, the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church Choir and has completed two CDs with the Central Moravian Church Choir- Christmas Eve at Central Moravian Church and Favorite Hymns of Central Moravian Church. Warner Brothers Publications has also published Rebecca’s Collection of hymn introductions and interludes, The Coral Ridge Collection.
