Next weekend (Sat. July 21 and Sun. July 22) at Bethlehem’s Blueberry Festival at the scenic Burnside Plantation, a couple of friends and I will be presenting a colonial beer making demonstration. My buddy, beer historian and Head Brewer at Bethlehem Brew Works, Christopher Bowen will be leading the mission as he portrays legendary Christmas City beer maker, Moravian and modernizer, Johann Sebastian Goundie.
Bowen refers to Goundie as “The Patron Saint of Brewing in Bethlehem,” as he was the city’s first brewer and first mayor. This influential and pioneering 1800s businessman changed Bethlehem’s ways.
