Description

Shibori, the art of manipulating cloth before dyeing, results in eye-catching patterns. The practice is used in many cultures and geographic regions, with the earliest examples coming from Peru around 500 CE. Try your hand at folding, tying, sewing, knotting, and wrapping to create your own unique textiles. Learn the history of shibori while trying six basic techniques with artist and instructor Michelle Meade.

While at the Single Sisters’ House, learn about the role of early textile dyeing and the dye works in 18th Century Moravian Bethlehem and see examples of dyed thread Moravian women used in their textiles and weavings.

All participants will receive a tea towel and bandana or hair scrunchie to dye, and are encouraged to bring their own cotton textiles from home to dye as well.

Date: 9/30 (rain date 10/1)

Time: 1 PM – 3 PM
