Moravian Soundscapes Lecture & Polyglot Singing Performance

Sunday, October 15th, 2023 at 1:00 pm 4:00 pm

“Moravian Soundscape” Lecture & Polyglot Singing Performance Overview

Historic Bethlehem and professor Sarah Eyerly invite you to experience “Moravian Soundscapes,” a two-day event offering a unique walking tour with sound installations and the Jeanette Barres Zug Lecture at the Gemeinhaus Saal, Moravian Museum.

Sarah Eyerly

Bethlehem’s past doesn’t stop on the cobblestones. How did Eyerly do it? The 49th Zug Lecture hosts Professor Eyerly when she presents her research and the process through which she developed Moravian Soundscapes and her book, Moravian Soundscapes: A Sonic History of Moravian Missions in Early Pennsylvania.

The lecture culminates in multi-language performance of a hymn Eyerly prepared in three different languages including English, Mohican, and German for four voice parts (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass) to recreate the Moravian tradition of polyglot singing.

Day will include special activities for children and the launch of What about the Kids?: A Tour of the Moravian Museum with Things for Young Hands to Do. Find out what the average school day was like for children in Bethlehem, try your hand at some of the early trades, and learn about the Birthday Book!

This program is supported by the Jeanette Barres Zug endowment fund.
