Moravian Apothecary Garden Recreated

Join Judy Gilotti, a Penn State Master Gardener and lead caretaker for the Historic Bethlehem Apothecary Garden, on August 23 from 1 PM – 3 PM, beginning at the Moravian Museum of Bethlehem, as she offers an enlightening program on the important role herbs and plants played in the 18th- and 19th-century medicine.

On Moravian Apothecary Garden Recreated, Judy will discuss her research into the original apothecary garden and how the plan came together to recreated this historic spot located off Heckewelder Place in the heart of the Moravian Church Settlements-Bethlehem World Heritage Site.

The afternoon begins at the Moravian Museum of Bethlehem, then includes a visit to the garden, as well as a guided tour of the 1752 Apothecary, the oldest continually operating pharmacy before closing in the 1950s; God’s Acre, the oldest cemetery in Bethlehem; and the Moravian Museum of Bethlehem to explore the Moravian Care & Cure: Bethlehem Medicine During the Revolution exhibition, where visitors will learn how Bethlehem’s Moravian community built an unusually organized, humane system of medical care and put it to the test treating wounded Continental Army soldiers during the Revolution.

Judy Gilotti is dedicated to healing through nature. She has a certificate from Longwood Gardens in Floral Design and is currently enrolled at North Carolina State University, where she is studying Therapeutic Horticulture. Judy’s interests include container gardening, historic gardens, and floral design. She believes that exposure to plants and nature bring comfort, purpose, and mental relief to everyone. Judy actively shares this passion by volunteering at local continuing care facilities, restoring historic gardens, and teaching beginner gardening skills to her community.
